Hey all. Gonna start working on the next strip soon, been a bit busy getting a new workspace set up and doing some commissions. Even though this series isn’t on a schedule, I still at least like to get a monthly update in.

If you like, you can catch my stream here and follow me on Twitter or Facebook to see when I’m live. Usually I just kind of do warmup sketches and maybe take some simple requests if the mood strikes.

Ao Oni: no, I will not review it. So, been a while again. Sorry for the unannounced month’s break, but on the up side, my bragging that I would update before Dresden Codak would on Facebook the other day, I *did* cause Dresden Codak to post a new page. So if you’re a fan of that, please direct your thanks and Patreongolds to me. If nothing else, I’ve taught myself not to promise more frequent updates, because almost immediately afterwards Things Happen or fail to happen.

Not really sure what I’ll be doing next, but it *won’t* be Ao Oni.

Bluh, that was a long wait. This is the first time all five characters showed up in the same strip! I very nearly forgot how their costumes went.

[+/-]#28: DARK SOULS (BRIEF)

[+/-]#28: DARK SOULS (BRIEF) published on No Comments on [+/-]#28: DARK SOULS (BRIEF)

Since really, it seems like about everyone and their extended family has played Dark Souls by now (between frequent sales/giveaways and lots of exposure), I didn’t really want to go super in depth about it, but I wanted to at least *touch* on the game.

I put off playing Dark Souls for a long time, mostly because I have a thing about fantasy settings, especially ‘gritty’ ones, but after lots of recommendations from friends, seeing it enjoyed by some LP-ers with similar tastes to mine, and well, its cheapness, I finally took the plunge, and what a plunge it was. FROM Software has never liked to hold your hand through their games, as any Armored Core veteran would probably relate. Even the bulk of the story in Dark Souls is inferred through item descriptions and stopping to really think a moment about how some of these important-sounding names relate to each other. (For example, Artorias the Abysswalker is mentioned early in the game, and later on, you need to enter the Abyss- now where was that Seal with his name on it…?) As far as its infamous difficulty goes, yeah, it’s hard, but there is always a way out, and it usually feels like it’s on you when you fail, which keeps you coming back rather than throwing in the towel and writing it off as crap. I hear mixed things about DS2, mainly the gist seems to be that it’s good, but not as good as 1. I’m more interested in going back to play Demon’s Souls, though… Not like I don’t have other things to play.

I’m always sort of screwing with my style or format with these things, partly trying to find just the right feel and partly to keep things fresh. I like how the coloring in this one came out, especially compared to the one before it (especially since both strips have involved Dixie’s dark room.) For a while, I’ve been trying to be more concise and wrap these things up faster so I don’t spend a fortnight on every single one, though in the case of the last one I wound up doing way more panels than probably necessary for sake of comic timing.

I think eventually I’m going to start delving into retro/obscure game awareness sort of material though, since that’s what interests me the most. It’s been neat sampling the mainstream and seeing that it’s not all hype, all the time, but it’s a tad on the pricy side, and well, I’m not really making money on art or anything. The fact that we’re transitioning to a whole new hardware generation isn’t really helping my optimism either. But hey! Not everyone on Earth has experienced the joy of Wolf Fang or Bahamut Lagoon yet.

Sorry for the long post. I think I’m chattier tonight than I counted on starting off. Have a good one, my friends.

Writing about games I like is kinda hard for these sometimes since Dixie’s still got to nitpick. This one wasn’t so hard, though, since I’m not the biggest Zelda fan and all!

The eyes on graffiti-Link do kind of creep me out a little, seriously.

[+/-] EXTRA: INTERMISSION

Oh wow. It has been a while since the last installment of [+/-], and even though I have been working on something else, I had no intention of dropping the girls or this series. Mostly, as I’ve said elsewhere, my day job changed, and it’s been a lot harder to work up the drive to do much outside of it for a while. Feeling better now, though, and getting back into the swing of doing more than just sketches for the blog and the occasional commission or web work. Stay tuned, I will try not to go dead for so long at a time in the future.

This was originally going to be the first part of a strip on A Link Between Worlds, but since it’s kind of a lengthy non game related bit, I decided to go ahead and post this portion as a lead in to the actual review part. Which is back to being more of a ‘review’ again and less of a crazy dress up thing. You guys prefer it one way or another? Feel free to leave a comment. The handful of ones I have get so lonely.

(That said, I still don’t have a schedule set for this series, but I usually strive for at least monthly.)

WordPress’s new dashboard is going to take getting used to on my phone screen. It really WANTS to look like the Facebook app, but the menu bar is too finicky to imitate it in function. Gnfhghgh.

Anyway. Next installment of the Pokeymans review “saga” is in the works and should go up this week. It goes back to reviewy territory, sort of. You know, nothing makes me want to put a game down more than turning it into “work” sometimes. Not always though! I found the bonus challenges in Vanquish really addicting for a while.

profCamoVacation’s over, but I still hope to stick to more frequent updates. Enjoy!

Are the girls in virtual reality? Tripping balls? Or just using the studio’s green screen better? Only time will fail to tell.
